For your next assignment you will curate an installation / exhibit on one or more wiki pages for one post-war / contemporary artist of your choice. Your installation will display at least ten images or examples of that artists work, provide background information about the work and artist, and use at least one example as a case study where you position that work within the contemporary art world and discuss what you see as the cultural significance of that artist's work.

The proposal

A proposal for your installation / exhibit is due March 23. The proposal (1-2 pp) should include the following:
  • the artist you have picked with a brief list of the sources you have found
  • the rationale for selecting this artist and the example you think you will showcase
  • a brief explanation of the position you will take about this artist's work
  • a preliminary description of how you intend to install the exhibit (see below)

The installation / exhibit

I will work with you to plan and construct the installation, but your proposal should give some indication of how you would like to manage it. The simplest paradigm is to create a Flickr slide show which you embed on a wiki page and then add the rest of the material for the showcase example to that page as I did for the Jeff Koons and Andy Warhol pages.

You can also propose more "creative" installations which use a wiki page as a jumping off point for something more complex that you think better suits the spirit of the artists work. You could, for example, use a VodPod viewer or Capzles show, particularly if you are dealing with a video artist. You could also incorporate any other social media site into the installation such as a Google site, MySpace page, YouTube page, etc. Google sites gives you considerably more freedom and control over the design and look of the installation - see, for example, my Visual Culture Web site and another site I designed with a colleague, It is also very easy to create slide shows with audio tracks on Picasa. which can be uploaded to YouTube See Creative Commons Search for music and video you can legally use that will not be deleted by the YouTube police.

How to pick and position an artist

The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters ( Africa ), Yinka Shonibare
You are free to pick anyone born after WW II who creates visual "stuff" that you are willing to designate as art, including any of the artists referenced in Seven Days in the Art World, pages in this wiki, or anyone whose work falls outside the normal definition of art (comics, graphic design/novels, video and video mashups, street and grafitti "art," etc). Just make sure you can find enough material about them and examples to exhibit.

One way to select an artist is to decide first if you want to pick one of the known artists mentioned in Seven Days and/or represented here on the pages for Afro Modern, the Christie's auctions, CalArts, the Whitney Biennial, and Skin Fruit (see below for a listing of the last three). You can also search through any of the links on the left navigation frame under places and spaces. A particularly good source for a diverse list are the artists who have appeared in the PBS series Art21

Another way to select an artist is to first decide on the position you want to consider. As Thornton notes in the preface to Seven Days, "contemporary art has become a kind of alternative religion for atheists" (p. xiv). And it is certainly a religion with many denominations. For one way to classify artists, look at the Village Voice review of the Whitney Biennial (bottom of page) where Christian Viveros-Fauné divides some of the artists in the show into three types: new modernists; post-minimalists, and the new realists(see also neoreallism). You can also consider the world of low-brow art and deviant art. And see the Wikipedia entry for net.art.

A third way to select an artist is by gender and /or ethnic background. I have used stars and bold type font to indicate the artists in the lists below who are known not to be straight white males. My own suggestions for this category from the lists below and Art21 are:

You should note that the Skin Fruit show is more international than the Whitney Biennial, which is restricted to American artists. The Whitney Biennial, however, is notable for the number of female artists included in the show - see Triumph: Women Win Slim Majority in Next Whitney Biennial.

Registering your selection

Each of you should pick a different artist. The first claim on an artist wins. To register and time stamp your selection, click on the post "Registering Your Artist" below and follow the instructions there so that the name of the artist you claim shows up in the discussion board list here.
